Author Talk: Karen Shiffman LateinerAdult Events 10/12/2018, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Main Library – Auditorium
Join us for a talk and Q&A with former longtime Montclair resident Karen Shiffman Lateiner, author of Timeless Dance: A Story of Change and Loss.
About the book:
Timeless Dance takes you on Karen Shiffman Lateiner’s compelling journey to understand the gender transition of her remarkable son, fully embrace the woman he becomes and, just two years later, grapple with her child’s untimely death. Informed by her Jewish roots, the author speaks frankly of her experiences of family, joy, death, grief, gender, and the power of the human spirit. Join her on an unusual tour of a mother’s mind as she reflects on her own history in coping with her child’s transition and death. At a time when transgender issues were still hidden, she and her family educate themselves and their communities, turning their grief to advocacy. More than a memoir, this story of change and loss is a tribute to her child’s legacy as a writer and computer software developer, and to the love and support of family and friends.
About the author:
Karen Shiffman Lateiner holds both an M.A. and M.Ed. in Educational Psychology. Throughout her personal life, and her professional career as an infant development specialist and mental health clinician, she has advocated safe and nurturing school environments for all children. Among her greatest influences are her two children who taught her much about life. After retirement, she and her husband traveled the country by motorhome before making Arizona their home. Combining her love of writing and the Sonoran desert, Ms. Lateiner encourages other writers in a Hike and Write group she created.

The Little Read: Local Pre-schoolsKid & Family Events 10/16/2018, 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM Main Library – Auditorium
The Library’s annual Little Read has become one of the fall’s must-attend events for families with young children. Study after study shows that early reading with children helps them learn to speak, interact, bond with parents and read early themselves.
Each participant reads aloud in 10-minute slots scheduled throughout the five-day event, which is geared to children in pre-school through grade three. Readings take place at different locations throughout Montclair, with a wide variety of books for readers to choose from. This year, some of the readers will include Mayor Robert Jackson, Library Director Peter Coyl, and Fire Chief John Herrmann (with firefighters).
Funds raised through sponsorships of this free event support the Children’s Department and the Children’s Summer Reading Program. The Children’s Summer Reading Program serves more than 1,000 children. Last year the children and teens enrolled read 14,900 books!
Since the event’s inception in 2009, Scholastic has been a lead sponsor and provides a free book to each child attending the bedtime stories event. We also want to thank Josh and Judy Weston and HUMC Mountainside who joined as lead sponsors this year. Baristanet, Rosemary and Al Iversen, Schumacher Chevrolet, Montclair State University, Rose Cali, Gloria and John Pak, Watchung Booksellers, School of Rock, Sparkles Dentistry, Cornerstone Montclair, Hello Products, Montclair Orthodontics and TD Bank Montclair are also contributing sponsors.
