Briana Zonas: “Moments of Emotional Memory” Exhibit at the Montclair Public Library
The Montclair Public Library’s popular art series continues with “Moments of Emotional Memory”, created by Briana Zonas on display from January 2 through January 29 in the gallery of the Main Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042.
Briana Zonas has graciously shared this amazing exhibit with the Library to help us welcome in the New Year. She is an American interdisciplinary artist interested in how personal transformation operates within the complex labyrinth of subjective reality and emotion. Her work examines how women transform in powerful ways through lived experience, evolving within the push–pull of contemporary issues and stressors. In the throes of significant change, women can resemble the Amazon lily that grows in sticky river mud—appearing to thrive in an adverse environment, yet dwelling within a reality that is a very different struggle from what is visible on the surface.
Her mixed medium and collage paintings of the female form exude a fusion of colors and resistance through a palette of blues, purples, and reds with splashes of yellow and black, and glints of gold, bronze and silver. She plays with organic shapes, crooked unsteady lines, and the human face.
Born in the United States, Briana has traveled extensively. She moved to Greece with her family when she was eight, and early artistic experiences took her to Paris, London, New York, Athens, and Hong Kong. Continuing her international focus, she spent a decade in the rug design industry, working for distinguished firms Odegard and Bashian Rugs before starting Zonas Creative Carpet.
Briana Zonas attended:
The Parsons the New School for Design – Bachelor of Fine Arts, 1994
Fashion Institute of Technology – Associate Degree in Applied Science, 1995
London College of Communications – Certificate in Display & Presentation, 1996
The Vermont College of Fine Arts – Master of Fine Arts, 2016
In and around her education, her travels inspired her to study Japanese kimonos, ceramics, vintage postcards, and street fashions, as well as Indian block-printed linens and Tibetan rug symbols and motifs. In this wide-ranging art practice, she explored the fullness of humanity in bemused contemplation of the battle between harmony and chaos.
Briana has exhibited her work in solo and group shows, nationally and internationally, including the 2016 Miami Performance International Festival and the French Institute Alliance Française in 2017. Most recently, her paintings Rise and Memory Cloud are on screen at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
Also a yoga practitioner, Briana brings the disciplines of art and yoga into conversation, using body movement in her painting, where paint is sensual in its form, be it ink, acrylic, or watercolor, providing a gateway to the emotional center. She believes the arts can offer pathways to healing from personal and cultural trauma, as well as break the boundaries of societal norms that are limiting. Her work reflects her interest in women’s studies, sexuality, the mind-body connection, and global spirituality. She is currently an Artist in Residence at the Arts Warehouse in Delray Beach, Florida.
Be sure take time out of your busy day and walk through the gallery enjoy this breathtaking exhibit that speaks to you from the heart and reaches out to touch your soul showing us that life is full of possibilities.
