Every Wednesday Matinee
On Wednesdays at 2 p.m., Montclair Public Library hosts The Every Wednesday Matinee, a film series presented in its auditorium. In February, movies will be shown to honor Black History Month.
The Jackie Robinson Story (February 7) – Starring Jackie Robinson, Ruby Dee, Minor Watson. Biography of Jackie Robinson, the first black major league baseball player in the 20th century. Traces his career in the Negro leagues and the major leagues. (1950, 77 minutes, black & white).
Lilies of the Field (February 14) – Starring Sidney Poitier, Lilia Skala, Lisa Mann. A traveling handyman becomes the answer to the prayers of nuns who wish to build a chapel in the desert. (1963, 95 minutes, black & white).
Cabin in the sky (February 21) – Starring Ethel Waters, Eddie ‘Rochester’ Anderson, Lena Horne. A compulsive gambler dies during a shooting, but he’ll receive a second chance to reform himself and to make up with his worried wife. (1943, 98 minutes, black & white).
A Raisin in the Sun (February 28) – Starring Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Ruby Dee. A substantial insurance payment could mean either financial salvation or personal ruin for a poor black family. (1961, 128 minutes, black & white).
