Every Wednesday Matinee
On Wednesdays at 2 pm, Montclair Public Library hosts The Every Wednesday Matinee, a film series presented in its auditorium. In September 2019 we will be watching movies about working and workplace conditions. The movies are as follows:
The Grapes of Wrath (September 4) Starring: Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine, Charley Grapewine. Story of the migration of the Joad family to California from their dust- bowl farm in Oklahoma during the Great Depression. (1940, 129 minutes, Black & White).
9 to 5 (September 11) Starring: Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman, Elizabeth Wilson, Sterling Hayden. Three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with, and their overthrow of, the company’s unsavory Boss. (1980, 110 minutes, Color).
Bound for Glory (September 18) Starring: David Carradine, Ronny Cox, Melinda Dillon, Gail Strickland, Randy Quaid. Semi-autobiographical tale of folk singer Woody Guthrie and his fight for fair treatment of migrant workers (1976, 146 minutes, color).
On the Waterfront (September 25) Starring: Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Eva Marie Saint, Rod Steiger, Pat Henning. Focuses on union violence and corruption amongst longshoremen, while detailing widespread corruption, extortion, and racketeering on the waterfronts of Hoboken, New Jersey. (1953, 108 minutes, Black & White).
