CANCELLED: Open Book Club – In The Time Of The Butterflies
The book club On Wednesday, April 3rd at 7PM is cancelled as the moderator is ill.
On Thursday, April 11th at 7 PM, Julia Alvarez will be appearing in person at Open Book/ Open Mind at Central Presbyterian Church. Tickets are available at this link. The ticket includes a new paperback copy of In The Time of the Butterflies with new 25th-anniversary cover artwork. Her other novels will also be re-released and available for purchase at the event.
Julia described her inspiration for the st0ry: “In 1960, a few months after my family fled the dictatorship of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, the three Mirabal sisters were brutally murdered. Founders of the underground, las Mariposas (the Butterflies, their code name) had inspired resistance cells throughout the country. (My father had joined one of these cells, which was cracked by the SIM, the secret police, in the summer of 1960 — the reason we were forced to flee.) This novel tells the Mirabal story through the lens of fiction. Needless to say, this book is one I felt compelled to write.“
Registration is full for this event. If this is a Kids & Family event, please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to be added to the waiting list.
