Open Book Club – In The Time Of The Butterflies
We had an Open Book Club for How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents in 2018 but we will next be discussing In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, before her appearance at Open Book/ Open Mind on Thursday, April 11th at 7 PM at Central Presbyterian Church.
To attend the event on April 11th, please purchase a ticket at this link when activated. The ticket includes a new paperback copy of In The Time of the Butterflies with new 25th-anniversary cover artwork. Her other novels will be updated, too and will be available for purchase at the event.
Julia described her inspiration for the st0ry: “In 1960, a few months after my family fled the dictatorship of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, the three Mirabal sisters were brutally murdered. Founders of the underground, las Mariposas (the Butterflies, their code name) had inspired resistance cells throughout the country. (My father had joined one of these cells, which was cracked by the SIM, the secret police, in the summer of 1960 — the reason we were forced to flee.) This novel tells the Mirabal story through the lens of fiction. Needless to say, this book is one I felt compelled to write.“
