Open Book/Open Mind: Authors Garth Hallberg and Estep Nagy in Conversation about Crafting Fiction

Two rising stars of the literary world and Montclair residents, Garth Hallberg and Estep Nagy, will be in conversation on the art of writing fiction, particularly about fictional families. The authors will interview each other and intersperse short readings from their novels during the event.

Garth Hallberg has a newly released, full-color edition of his first book A Field Guide to the North American Family. His last novel, City on Fire, was a New York Times and international best-seller, has been translated into seventeen languages, and was named one of the best books of 2015 by The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Wall Street Journal, NPR, and Vogue. His short stories have appeared in Prairie Schooner, Glimmer Train, and Best New American Voices 2008, and he has written critical essays for The New York Times Book Review, The Guardian, The Millions, and Slate. He was a two-time finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing.

Estep Nagy released his first novel, We Shall Not All Sleep, to critical acclaim in 2017. His fiction and other writing have appeared in Southwest ReviewThe BelieverPaper, Box Office, and elsewhere.  He wrote and directed the independent feature film The Broken Giant (1998), which is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.  His plays have been produced and developed at theaters across the country, including at Actors Theater of Louisville and the Source Festival in Washington, DC.

Watchung Booksellers will have both authors’ books available for purchase and signing at the close of the event.
