Databases by Subject

The Library has many databases that can assist you and your parents with both reading and homework. These databases are free to Montclair Public Library cardholders and can be accessed in the library or wherever an Internet connection can be found. All you need is your library card and pin number to get started! Browse around on your own or stop by the Library for a demonstration.



Here are some databases that you might particularly useful:

 

World Book Online Encyclopedia: World Book Online for Kids has thousands of articles written at the appropriate grade level for easy reading by kids. Its simple navigation enables children to find their way easily through the entire kids encyclopedia online. World Book Online for Kids has engaging images, illustrations, and other rich media content that help bring the text to life for children. Interactive games and activities join learning with fun.


 

Learning Express Library: This website contains practice tests to assess and sharpen your skills in Reading, Writing & Math. Subjects are arranged by grade level beginning at fourth grade. There are also tests to help high school students prepare for college entrance exams.



Facts on File: Facts on File is a great resource for homework assignments and other school projects for students in grades six through high school. There is a heavy focus on history; other database topics include science, health and Harold Bloom’s Literary Criticisms. There is also a world atlas with printable maps. Many articles include photographs and videos.

Novelist K-8 Plus: This database is filled with book reviews and recommended reading lists to help your find your next favorite read. This is a great site to use when writing book reports and author studies. Novelist K-8 Plus also provides book discussion guides, which are perfect to use with book clubs.



Kids Search: Working on a research project? This is a terrific search engine designed for students in grades 3-8. You'll find not only reference books and encyclopedias that address your topic, but also magazine and newspaper articles, radio and TV news transcripts, country/state/province fact sheets, photos, maps, flags, and more!

Searchasaurus: This search tool is geared toward young researchers through grade 5 and provides access to articles on topics including animals, history, and more. It offers an animated, kid-friendly interface and indicates the reading level of available materials.

Designed specifically for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text for nearly 1,750 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975.

Middle Search Plus

Middle Search Plus provides full text for more than 140 popular, middle school magazines. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text is also available for thousands of biographies and historical essays. Middle Search Plus also contains 84,774 biographies, 105,786 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 400,972 photos, maps and flags.

Primary Search

Primary Search provides full text for more than 70 popular, magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990.

From business and political science to literature and psychology, ProQuest Research Library™ provides one-stop access to a wide range of popular academic subjects. The database includes more than 4,050 titles—nearly 2,800 in full text—from 1971 forward. It features a highly-respected, diversified mix of scholarly journals, trade publications, magazines, and newspapers.

TOPICsearch contains full text for over 60,000 articles from 399 diverse sources including international and regional newspapers, EBSCO's unparalleled collection of periodicals, biographies, public opinion polls, book reviews, pamphlets, and government information.
