Databases by Subject

The Library has many databases that can assist you with both reading and homework. These databases are free to Montclair Public Library cardholders and can be accessed in the library or wherever an Internet connection can be found. All you need is your library card and pin number to get started! Browse around on your own or stop by the Library for a demonstration.



Here are some databases that you might particularly useful:



Academic Search Premier: An excellent source of scholarly journals in all academic disciplines. More than 8000 journals are indexed and full text is provided for more than 4500 of those journals.



Biographies Plus Illustrated: Includes more than 147,000 in-depth, full-text profiles, covering newsmakers and prominent figures from a wide range of fields.



Columbia Gazetteer of the World: Contains over 170,000 articles or entries on all types of places throughout the world; both physical places and political entities. Most articles have details on where the place is located, its dimensions and borders, and information on economic activities, demographics, history, and former or alternate names and different spellings and pronunciations.



Facts on File: A great place to go when researching a variety of topics. Its rich collection of history databases includes: American History Online, American Women's History Online, African American History Online, American Indian History Online, Modern World History Online, and Ancient and Medieval History Online. When writing a literature paper, check out Bloom's Literary Reference Online. For science-related research, check out Science Online and Health Reference Center.



Student Resource Center Bronze: This resource center offers easy access to award-winning content based on national curriculum standards. Aimed at high school students, this database includes "original reference materials, overviews, critical essays, a massive archive of primary source documents and periodicals, and full text from newspapers that are updated daily."





The following databases are provided by BCCLS. To access them from the BCCLS homepage, click on "Magazines, Newspapers, and Reference Resources" in the upper lefthand corner. Enter your library card number on the following page and click "Log-In to Reference Resources." Literary Reference Center: Writing an English paper? This is a great place to go when you need to find critical commentary on a book or an author.



NoveList Plus: Find fiction book recommendations on your favorite topic or by your favorite author. Includes fiction for adults, teens and children.



Points of View Reference Center: This database gives you access to thousands of articles that explore multiple points of view on controversial topics in society today. You can use these full-text articles to help you develop an argument, write a paper, or prepare for a debate.



Student Research Center: This database is designed specifically for students in grades 6-12, and it makes your searching super-easy! Once you've entered your search term(s), just click under the picture for the type of information you want to receive (Magazines, Biographies, Primary Source Documents, etc.). Covers a wide range of topics, including history, math, sports, science, and lots more.

Health Reference CenterProvides clear and comprehensive information on conditions and diseases, health and wellness, mental health, and the human body.
History Reference Center

History Reference Center offers full text from more than 2,400 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books, cover to cover full text for 135 leading history periodicals, more than 61,100 historical documents, 57,000 biographies of historical figures, more than 110,200 historical photos and maps, and more than 80 hours of historical video.

Academic Search™ Premier contains indexing for 8,025 publications, with full text for more than 4,500 of those titles. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 titles. Academic Search Premier contains unmatched full text coverage in biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, religion & theology, etc.

MAS Ultra - School Edition

Designed specifically for high school libraries, this database contains full text for more than 500 popular, high school magazines. MAS Ultra – School Edition also provides more than 360 full text reference books, 85,670 biographies, 105,783 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 400,972 photos, maps & flags, color PDFs and expanded full text backfiles (back to 1975) for key magazines.

Designed specifically for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text for nearly 1,750 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975.

Middle Search Plus

Middle Search Plus provides full text for more than 140 popular, middle school magazines. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text is also available for thousands of biographies and historical essays. Middle Search Plus also contains 84,774 biographies, 105,786 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 400,972 photos, maps and flags.

NewsBank NewspapersNewsbank offers cover to cover information from more than 200 newspapers including Newark Star-Ledger (1996 - current) and The Record (1985 - current).
Newspaper Source

Newspaper Source provides cover-to-cover full text for 35 national & international newspapers. The database also contains selective full text for 375 regional (U.S.) newspapers. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are also provided.

Primary Search
